Theism and Psychological Science: A Call for Rapprochement
The authors offer two arguments for the inclusion of theism in natural science. First, an argument against excluding theism is offered. Though early roots of science promoted a view that it is a way to accumulate knowledge that is untainted by presuppositions and traditions, postmodern critiques call this into question. Scientists have sometimes rejected religion as a context-dependent, tradition-based way of knowing, yet science itself is also context-dependent and tradition-based. Second, an argument for including theism in psychological is offered. Theistic beliefs are relevant insofar as they are part of human experience for many, they represent a form of human diversity, and they have been associated with some positive health outcomes
Efficient sorting of free electron orbital angular momentum
We propose a method for sorting electrons by orbital angular momentum (OAM). Several methods now exist to prepare electron wavefunctions in OAM states, but no technique has been developed for efficient, parallel measurement of pure and mixed electron OAM states. The proposed technique draws inspiration from the recent demonstration of the sorting of OAM through modal transformation. We show that the same transformation can be performed on electrons with electrostatic optical elements. Specifically, we show that a charged needle and an array of electrodes perform the transformation and phase correction necessary to sort OAM states. This device may enable the analysis of the spatial mode distribution of inelastically scattered electrons
The New Zealand Strong Motion Earthquake Recorder Network
The network of strong-motion earthquake recorders, maintained throughout
New Zealand by the Engineering Seismology Section of the Department of
Scientific and Industrial Research, is described. The instruments are either
deployed as ground instruments to measure potential earthquake attack on
structures, or in structures, e.g. buildings, dams and industrial installations,
to record structural response. Details are given of installation of instruments , maintenance, laboratory work, record retrieval and digitisation,
costs and staffing for the network. Future developments mooted include an
improved digitising system, the introduction of an improved version of the
existing mechanical-optical instrument in 1979, and, in the long term, the
introduction of an entirely new digital recorder, having an electrical
output from its accelerometers, which will make possible the transmission
of data by telephone or radio link
Superconductivity and magnetism in platinum-substituted SrFe2As2 single crystals
Single crystals of SrFe2-xPtxAs2 (0 < x < 0.36) were grown using the self
flux solution method and characterized using x-ray crystallography, electrical
transport, magnetic susceptibility, and specific heat measurements. The
magnetic/structural transition is suppressed with increasing Pt concentration,
with superconductivity seen over the range 0.08 < x < 0.36 with a maximum
transition temperature Tc of 16 K at x = 0.16. The shape of the phase diagram
and the changes to the lattice parameters are similar to the effects of other
group VIII elements Ni and Pd, however the higher transition temperature and
extended range of superconductivity suggest some complexity beyond the simple
electron counting picture that has been discussed thus far.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figure
Alternative derivation of the relativistic contribution to perihelic precession
An alternative derivation of the first-order relativistic contribution to
perihelic precession is presented. Orbital motion in the Schwarzschild geometry
is considered in the Keplerian limit, and the orbit equation is derived for
approximately elliptical motion. The method of solution makes use of coordinate
transformations and the correspondence principle, rather than the standard
perturbative approach. The form of the resulting orbit equation is similar to
that derived from Newtonian mechanics and includes first-order corrections to
Kepler's orbits due to general relativity. The associated relativistic
contribution to perihelic precession agrees with established first-order
results. The reduced radius for the circular orbit is in agreement to
first-order with that calculated from the Schwarzschild effective potential.
